On Sunday, July 23, 2017, a fish kill was identified during a routine lake patrol by the Badin Police at the Badin Swim Access Area on Badin Lake off of Highway 740 in Stanly County, North Carolina.  Cube Carolinas immediately reported the incident to North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s (NCDEQ) Environmental Emergency hotline, NCDEQ’s Mooresville Regional office, as well as the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC).  NCDEQ investigated the fish kill on Monday, July 24, 2017 and identified the causes of the single-species kill as high water temperature and low dissolved oxygen.  Several other species of fish were observed swimming in the area, so water contamination is not the cause.  It appears that a few hundred blueback herring, which are a very temperature sensitive species also susceptible to low dissolved oxygen levels, died.  Upon completing its investigation, NCDEQ authorized the cleanup of the area.  The cleanup is complete, and the Badin Swim Access Area remains open.
